Dead Island Roundtable Interview

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/071511b.html

Speaking of E3 2011, the first question that Kummer was asked was about the feedback they received during E3. A lot of the feedback they received from the press was fairly positive.Deep Silver, Dead Island's publisher, and Techland, Dead Island's developer, were both happy to hear that the press enjoyed the melee combat. When the game was first shown several years ago, there were a lot of questions about how well the melee combat would work. Kummer said that during E3, people "got it" right away and were enjoying themselves. However, there was also a bit of negative feedback during E3. The main of which, Kummer said, was balance. They are doing a lot of balance tweaking now to make sure that the difficulty, leveling, and co-op all feel right when the game ships. In co-op, for example, one of the balance tweaks they are working on is how high level and low level characters interact. When a low level character jumps into a high level character's game, the low level character will get a warning. The warning will notify low level players that the story may be spoiled and they will not be able to take any high level weapons back into their game. Techland doesn't want you to ruin your experience and the sense of survival by having overpowered weapons at a low level. A lot of the details of this feature are still being worked out, but it is there mainly for situations where a level 5 player is joining a level 25 player's game.

Dead Island Roundtable Interview

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/071511b.html

This past week, I sat down for a roundtable interview with Vincent Kummer, Deep Silver's Brand Manager, to chat about Dead Island as it reaches the end of its development. The roundtable consisted of me and a few other reporters from different web sites. It turned out to be a rather interesting session as it helped augment the information I was given during the demo at E3 last month.

Dead Island Trailer Wins Gold Award At Cannes

http://www.ripten.com/2011/06/29/dead-island-trailer-wins-gold-award-at-cannes/ When Dead Island's original announcement trailer released in February it created quite a stir. Some praised it for it's stunning animation, ingenious use of a music, reverse slow motion and how it all came together to depict an emotional, beautiful, yet gruesomely violent scene. Still others were distressed in the use and death of a fictional child in the animated film. While it became a viral success and and gave great hype to Dead Island, Polish developer Techland found themselves on the defensive and had to explain that children will not die in the game.

Earlier this week, select members of the gaming press were invited to participate in a conference call roundtable for Dead Island, one of this year's most anticipated games. Questions during the call were fielded by Deep Silver Brand Manager Vincent Kummer, along with public relations superstar Aubrey Norris.

In the short time I got to play, there were plenty of close calls, big explosions (especially when another journalist got a little silly with the grenade store he found), fun decapitations and limb destruction, and a good mix of melee and ranged combat. Communication was key, and each fight had that desperate quality to it that works so well in a cooperative horror game like this. Things felt much more hectic, too, considering how much we all had to rely on melee weapons to stay alive.

One more thing about my early trip through Banoi. Everywhere I looked, tropical flora reached over the man made, as if they're competing for space. The weather system oscillated quickly between heavy rain and dry spells. You could nearly feel the humidity.

Dead Island delivers dark, fun action in single- and multiplayer

"Dead Island" Demo Leaves Stronger Zombie Cravings

http://www.bostonbastardbrigade.com/2011/07/dead-island-demo-leaves-stronger-zombie-cravings/

At first play I already noticed a slight aiming issue, where if you didn't swing on the exact center of the screen where the zombie was you might wind up missing it entirely. Fortunately when it came time to bolt from the creatures and evade their hunger attacks the controls flowed easier than expected.Punching the undead also gave off more damage to them than one may think, so it seems possible to kill the zombies just with your character's bare fists.

I should probably stop name-dropping other games, because while Dead Island feels like it's borrowing the best from a wide range of great (and successful) games, the end effect is one that winds up feeling entirely unique. The four characters you can play as are immune to the zombie virus, so you guys are the ones tasked with doing most of the dangerous stuff on the tropical island of Banoi.Your quests are usually given by the few survivors that aren't immune; they often cower in the few areas of the island not infested by zombies. As you complete these missions, you level up and find and create new weapons and gear; it's not exactly Diablo or Borderlands when it comes to loot diversity, but there's definitely a strong sense of progression, especially in the talents that you choose - and each set of talents is unique to each of the four playable characters.

Speaking of throwing knives, we were also able to check out a few special abilities. My character, Logan, was especially great at the art of jettisoning blades. So much so that when you press B on the 360 controller, he goes into a trance like state, zeros in on all enemies and launches them rapid fire.Another character goes into rage mode throwing a flurry of powerful fists.

E3 MVG 2011 Selection: Dead Island preview – hands-on with the co-op mode that could be better than Left 4 Dead

http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/dead-island/preview/e3-mvg-2011-selection-dead-island-preview-hands-on-with-the-co-op-mode-that-could-be-better-than-left-4-dead/a-2011061392610496024/g-20070808134934738055

There are four playable characters, each with different abilities and strengths. I played as the female character, who is smaller and more adept with small weapons. I noticed almost immediately that walking felt slightly unnatural and found out this was due to the fact she is wearing high heels. This attention to detail drives home the inherent stress and desperation a real zombie game should incorporate.Even walking through water is maddeningly slow and frightening.

Third, team play. It's four player co-op, but you're not forced to use four players. If you want to go solo, the zombies will scale accordingly like Borderlands. However, this game obviously plays better with more people; given the difficulty of the game that I played, having folks able to watch your back is pretty essential (and more fun).Note, make sure you have friends with you, because with friendly fire is turned off, any item that is thrown or found as loot can be picked up by anyone. Zombies can be looted, and the stronger "thug" zombies can drop some nice loot as well as cash, so make sure one of your "enterprising" friends doesn't swoop in and grab your gear. Fortunately, unlike Borderlands, trading with your comrades is a breeze; a simple press of the X button between both players brings up a trade window.

I counted five zombie types on this poster mission, among them one that exudes noxious gas, of course the ram zombie and one bloated zombie that explodes upon impact. Good thing you have the ability to throw knives and retrieve them from the again dead corpse.

Secondly, they take some interesting new liberties with the old "killin' zombies" gameplay that folks have come to love from Left 4 Dead.As firearms are at a premium on the island, it's primarily about the melee weapons. Weapons can be bartered for with other NPC vendors and have traits that you might have seen in the old Diablo series as far as weapon drops (ie: Weak Blunt Morningstar, Sharp Electric Khurki, etc), include the "green-blue-purple-orange" item rarity scale, and regularly decay with use. Our team left the safe house armed to the teeth with shivs, bats and clubs, only to limp back to the safe house after breaking most of our makeshift gear. All gear can be repaired at a workbench, as well as upgraded with a variety of items you can find on the island, like batteries, nails, electric conduits, and the like. As ranged weapons are at a premium and some enemies are lethal at close range, you are able to throw everything you can pick up at zombies. You can even go so far as to throw a bladed weapon at a zombie, get it stuck in the zombie's head, pull the weapon back out, and then continue to hack at the zombie that you've targeted. Definitely satisfying.

So what differentiates the game from the 4-player co-op experience you would get from Left 4 Dead? Let's break it down:

First, Dead Island is an open world environment…and when I say "open world", I need you to understand what that means for the game. The demo the four of us played was a single side quest that took about twenty minutes. When we got back to the safe zone after a harrowing afternoon of hacking and slashing zombies through tropical-paradise-turned-wasteland, we looked at the sector map for the area we were at, and we'd barely scratched the surface. The guy giving the demo said that map covered approximately 8-10% of the island's playable area. Massive. And from what we toured, there weren't a lot of duplicated areas or art assets used.

E3 top pick: Dead Island

http://gamerlimit.com/2011/06/e3-top-pick-dead-island/

Albeit, whether you're an envoy of four or an army of one, strategy is a necessity when dealing with the Banoi nightmare. As I swing a hatchet I picked up, a stamina bar at the bottom of the screen depletes. That same bar gets smaller and smaller as I run. Coupled with degradation of weapons and limited bullets, Dead Island is as much a game of conservation as it is first person melee, e.g. true survival.

E3 top pick: Dead Island

http://gamerlimit.com/2011/06/e3-top-pick-dead-island/

We are assured that the game is built to scale as well, adjusting to the number of people you're with. It also promises that your campaign can continue even if someone drops out in the middle of a mission. In other words, if you all of a sudden find yourself playing alone, you won't have to face a four player difficulty (unless you want to).

E3 top pick: Dead Island

http://gamerlimit.com/2011/06/e3-top-pick-dead-island/ There is no rigid progression of zombies in Dead Island. The faster, more powerful ones stand alongside the more decayed, frail ones. They come in droves and they come alone, ensuring you don't know what you're going to get once you turn the corner. Supporting that imperative to survive, the game forces us to think just a little more critically, work closer as a team. Dead Island is designed for co-op, after all.

Once in the open, we don't meet zombies right away, but we hear them. The buffer is enough to get us immersed in the island town, but keeps us on our toes. Signs of violence are everywhere with spatters of blood on the concrete, crumbling facades, toppled cars, et al. Once the walking dead do surface, our teeth are clenched and we are raring to go to work.

I saw no evidence of any guns in the game, but there were plenty of melee weapons. The game is set completely in first person, and there were already a number of weapons around to make use of, such as paddles, broomsticks, cleavers, knives, and more. The graphics were amazing, with a lot of vibrant colors which you normally do not see in a horror game. The zombies looked great and the action was quick and brutal. Sometimes a swipe with a blade would take off the zombies head right off of its shoulders. There was a slight blur effect around the edges of the screen when looking around quickly that I didn't care for, but did not effect any part of the game.

Quests are one of the pillars of Dead Island and they do well to set it apart. Most other zombie games focus on escape, which often translates to reaching a singular goal. They may try to ratchet up the tension with a time limit and sudden shocks, but once you get from point A to B, there isn't much left to warrant a replay. Dead Island disrupts this model by making you beholden to your morals, and your character responsible for the living.

Hands-On Impressions of Dead Island 4 Player Co-Op

http://nerdreactor.com/2011/06/20/hands-on-impressions-of-dead-island-4-player-co-op/

The one thing I really like about Dead Island is that it really takes into account the mood and feel in the game. You can just take one look at any of the NPCs and know that person has been through hell. The 4 Player Co-Op offers something uniquely different from Left 4 Dead.Left 4 Dead was more about just mowing down zombies, while Dead Island focuses on the interaction between characters in a massive setting. It's almost as if the Fallout 3 developers were huge fans of The Walking Dead and decided to make a zombie video game. This is definitely one game to look foreword too.

Gamers will take control of four characters, each of which has his or her own unique traits and abilities. Some will be fast and agile while others will be big and powerful. Choose wisely because you will want to stay with the character throughout your adventure as the more you play the more XP and abilities for that character you unlock.Dead Island has major roots in the RPG realm but the action and gameplay is that of a first person action title. As you play, you earn XP and will gather weapons, parts, and money.

Aside from the tropical setting, Dead Island sounds like it might not be all that different than any other zombie game, right? That's when things got odd. You see, Dead Island is a horror game, but it is also an Action RPG. The first thing you do is pick up a weapon, which shows the weapons stats and what level you can use it.You go outside and the zombies have little lifebars above their heads along with what level they are. When you attack them, numbers show on the screen how many hit points of damage you've dealt. After defeating the initial zombies you are then given a quest which you can choose to accept. From that point on you move along the beach as though it were almost a dungeon crawler. You get weapons which degrade over time and then break. Some are level specific, and when you defeat zombies you gain experience. When you gain experience, you can choose to level up and unlock different branches of three different skill trees.

E3 top pick: Dead Island

http://gamerlimit.com/2011/06/e3-top-pick-dead-island/

At E3, Gamer Limit spent some quality time with the title, along with representatives from Techland and Deep Silver. After about 40 minutes poring over the nooks and crannies of the fictional island of Banoi, I must say that no other game captures the elements of survival and fear quite like Dead Island. It's enough to make this my E3 top pick.

The demo started off with a cutscene showing the perspective of someone taking pills and booze. This led to a woozy drunk effect on the camera and the character acting like an asshole at a club on the Island. Then suddenly the dance floor became a little crazy ass a woman attacked another person. After that all hell breaks loose and eventually the character passes out. You wake up in a cabin with people huddled inside hiding from the zombies outside.

In Dead Island, players must complete missions on this zombie-infested tropical island without getting eaten. Firearms are scarce so you'll often have to rely on makeshift melee weapons. At one point of the trailer, a character uses a paddle.

Once you are all set up, you move out of the church safehouse and start on your quest with your group. I like the teamwork element of the gameplay. You have to work in tandem with your group to ward off zombies and complete special tasks. One such tasks is putting up bulletin posters to notify survivors to get to the church. There are various zombies all over the place in this sandbox world. The environment is highly interactive. There are tons of tools and additional weapons.
